Lieutenant David Devine
Although the service file for David Devine is no longer available, he was probably the person of that name born in Armagh 11 January 1886, son of farmer John Devine and his wife Sarah (nee Mercer). By 1911 he was living in Dublin and working as a clothing assistant.
He enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 5 and 16 November 1914 (No.1346 – later No.71346 Corps of Hussars).
Devine embarked for France between 1916 and 1918, most likely as part of E Squadron, which left for France on 11 January 1916.
He rose to the rank of sergeant, and during 1917 applied for a commission. He was sent to officer cadet school and on 23 February 1918 was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and posted to the North Irish Horse.
On 23 August 1919 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He relinquished his commission on 1 April 1920.
Devine's residential address, soon after the war, was 19 Cherryfield Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin.
